A black executive perspective now presents need to know
2
:with the award winning hyphenated Dr.
3
:Nsenga Burton.
4
:Dr.
5
:Burton, what do we need to know?
6
:Dr. Nsenga Burton: Good afternoon
and thank you for joining me.
7
:Dr.
8
:Nsenga Burton with need to know with Dr.
9
:Nsenga.
10
:I am here today to talk to you
about some of the things that have
11
:been happening out in the universe.
12
:One of which was the, Trump rally, which
really was a masqueraded, uh, Klan rally.
13
:It looked like it anyway at,
uh, Madison square garden the
14
:other day and how people have had
different types of responses to it.
15
:Some people were like, Oh, it's
just performance and entertainment.
16
:That's what he does.
17
:You know, you can't
take all of that stuff.
18
:Literally there don't really
mean all of those hateful,
19
:mean and white supremacists.
20
:Uh, things that they have
said during the rally.
21
:Um, I'm sure you've seen it.
22
:You can watch the video for yourself.
23
:So we won't have any claims of
misinformation or disinformation.
24
:Just watch the video yourself
and then think about, you know,
25
:what your thoughts are on it.
26
:And the others have just been
really pissed off, particularly
27
:the Puerto Rican community.
28
:Um, many of whom their celebrities have
come out in support of Kamala Harris
29
:following, uh, this, and even Nicky Jam,
who had already had a, uh, kind of cluster
30
:with Trump who thought he was a woman.
31
:Um, that's how much he knew about him.
32
:Um, when he went in to, uh, endorse
Trump, Nicky Jam has, uh, rescinded
33
:his endorsement of Donald Trump.
34
:Um, and he stated that he was going
to vote for him because he believed
35
:him, uh, that he would do better
with the economy and immigration.
36
:I don't know what he's been listening to.
37
:Nicky Jam needs to clear
the jam out of his ears.
38
:Cause that is not something that's
gonna be positive for people.
39
:If Trump is elected based on
his platform, which you should
40
:read, it's on his website.
41
:So at any rate, um, what I want to
talk about though, is I'm finding it
42
:fascinating that people are talking
about the white house as if it is
43
:this kind of abstract thing, it's
not something that has a history.
44
:a lineage.
45
:Um, and that is not a business.
46
:It is basically this, the
headquarters of the business of
47
:the United States of America.
48
:And so when you're thinking about who
you're going to vote for, you have to
49
:be thinking about who's gonna be your
ceo, who's gonna be your chief executive
50
:officer, who's gonna be your chief
operating officer, things of that nature.
51
:And so for people to be so flippant,
flippant about who might be occupying
52
:that office, And to kind of just poo poo
or blow off what we saw, uh, in Madison
53
:Square Gardens is just really, um, scary.
54
:Um, because that means that you're not
able to really critically engage what
55
:you're seeing and to tie that to what
we expect and our expectations are of
56
:people who lead major corporations,
businesses, countries, and what have you.
57
:Uh, and one of those things is decorum.
58
:Protocol.
59
:Um, those things are very important.
60
:How one presents themselves, how one
talks about themselves, uh, the team with
61
:whom that person surrounds themselves.
62
:So Mr.
63
:Trump is the former president, thus
and so he can really create whatever
64
:environment he wants to create.
65
:Right.
66
:He can get a lot of people to say yes.
67
:I mean, we've been talking about this,
right, people who are going to vote
68
:against their own interests because
they really believe in him and what he
69
:believes and what he's talking about.
70
:Right.
71
:So when someone has the kind of
power that he has and has been able
72
:to hold on to, despite all of the
challenges and drama and trauma and
73
:whatever, Accusations convictions.
74
:In fact, um, felony convictions.
75
:In fact, that he has had, um,
is able to still kind of rise
76
:above that and be Teflon.
77
:Um, that means they really do have the
power to create whatever environment
78
:that they want and professional
environment that they want because,
79
:you know, being president of the United
States is actually serious business.
80
:So, you know, that's why they have, um,
You know, uh, different events where they
81
:do have comedians and people poking fun
at each other and roasting each other.
82
:You know, that's a specific, you know,
uh, event for the press and for people
83
:who are part of the media so they can
have fun and things of that nature.
84
:But certain things are just
not appropriate when you
85
:are running for president.
86
:And that is having a rally that
looks like a Klan rally when
87
:you are trying to represent the
entire United States of America.
88
:So in the same way that you would like
for your CEO to do what's best for
89
:everybody in the company, not just
for the C suite, not for the board of
90
:trustees, not just for the stakeholders,
uh, or investors or other folks like
91
:that, but for everyone in the company,
we have to be looking for a president
92
:who's effectively our CEO of our country,
which is effectively our business.
93
:Who is going to take care of everyone and
be sensitive to the needs and opinions
94
:and thoughts of everyone who's there.
95
:Not someone who's just going to ram
down our throats, whatever it is
96
:that he or she thinks we need to do.
97
:You have to really think
about your constituencies.
98
:So I just wanted to remind people,
you know, or need to know today.
99
:Something that you need to know
is that this is not a joke.
100
:This is actually a very serious matter.
101
:Who becomes the president
of the United States.
102
:And so you have to be
mindful of your brand.
103
:That's what the young people say.
104
:We used to call it our
professional reputation.
105
:You have to be mindful of the people
you surround yourself with and who you
106
:allow to speak on your behalf, because
that's what was happening there, right?
107
:You can't always be in every, every place.
108
:That's why you have a vice president.
109
:That's why you have,
uh, um, a spokesperson.
110
:That's why you have a.
111
:Communications or public relations
department where they, they send out the
112
:best person from your company to represent
whatever interests are out there.
113
:You can't be everywhere.
114
:So you have to have your people around
you who will be good reflections of you.
115
:And I just think that that, uh,
display of just Tom foolery.
116
:at best and just sheer and utter white
supremacist behavior at worst, which is
117
:a really, really terrible thing to do.
118
:So I just need you to know that people
are always watching you, whether or
119
:not you know this, that you can have
as much power as you think you can,
120
:um, and still make, Colossal mistakes.
121
:Because I think that
was a colossal mistake.
122
:He not only did, uh, you know, our former
president misread the room, he's misread
123
:the nation, even people in his own party.
124
:Um, and you know, he's teflon, so he
might be able to come back from it.
125
:But I just want you to know that we as
regular people do not have the luxury
126
:of making those kinds of mistakes.
127
:What happened in that room
would get all of us fired.
128
:Everybody would get fired.
129
:Um, you know, if we were being considered
for a leadership role, our candidacy
130
:and application would be withdrawn.
131
:That's how that works.
132
:So not trying to tell anybody how to vote.
133
:I'm just trying to tell you that
this is an important matter.
134
:It's a serious matter.
135
:Who becomes the president
of the United States.
136
:We can't say we're the most
powerful nation in the world.
137
:And then, and then want to pretend
like the white house and who's the
138
:president isn't a powerful thing.
139
:It is.
140
:It absolutely is.
141
:And it absolutely does matter who's in
there and how they conduct themselves
142
:and with whom they surround themselves.
143
:All right, so that's it.
144
:Tune in next week to the award winning
a black executive perspective podcast.
145
:And I'll see you next week
on Need to Know with Dr.
146
:Nsenga Burton.
147
:Bye.
148
:A Black Executive Perspective.
